About the Centre for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Viral Hepatitis

Welcome to the Centre for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Viral Hepatitis guaranteed by the Czech Hepatology Society and the Society of Infectious Medicine of the Czech Society of Infectious Diseases (ČLS JEP). We provide comprehensive care for patients with viral hepatitis in specialized outpatient clinics. We mainly focus on early diagnosis and treatment of people with chronic inflammatory liver disease caused by hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV).

We use modern procedures for diagnosis and monitoring of the development of liver involvement (fibrosis) during treatment. Our department has a device to perform transient elastography of the liver (FibroScan®). This is a non-invasive and painless ultrasound examination based on the measurement of liver tissue stiffness. This proven method now replaces liver biopsy in many cases. The examination is performed in fasting patients.

The indication for examination by our specialist is often the accidental detection of antibodies to viral hepatitis B or C in the blood during a preventive or preoperative examination, in the case of pregnant women or in patients before planned biological therapy, then as part of screening. Viral hepatitis antibody testing should be performed by any physician in a patient with an unclear liver lesion; however, people with normal liver transaminase levels may also be affected by chronic viral hepatitis.

Newly we can confirm the diagnosis of hepatitis C by rapid PCR tests (the result is so-called "on the spot"). Within a few days it is possible to start hepatitis C treatment at our clinic, which is in the form of tablets, completely without side effects, does not require hospitalization and has virtually 100% effect. After the treatment of hepatitis C, the patient is completely non-infectious. Although this treatment is very expensive, it is fully covered by health insurance companies (free of charge for the patient). Our department currently has sufficient financial resources for the treatment of viral hepatitis.
